A brass key lay beside a photograph from the school’s 1984 play. The draft display caption called it “the authentic key carried on opening night.” Zara turned it over and noticed a tiny 2019 stamp.
The club wanted an authentic object—the actual prop used in that production. A replica might look just like it, but a copy would have a different history. The key’s shape matched the photograph so closely that several students dismissed the newer stamp.
They also wanted to attribute the work to the stage designer, giving that person credit for making the displayed key. Zara asked for a maker’s record before printing a name.
The final display would be chronological, moving from earlier objects to later ones. But did this key belong under the date of the old design or the date of this particular object? The archive register and display instructions could settle questions that appearance alone could not.
